Changing the post order inside categories on wordpress

When writing my critical evaluation for my food blog I came across the idea that I have should have changed the order in my categories from descending to ascending. Sadly this wasn’t something I considered at the time, yet after a quick investigation online I found it could be done be a simple plug in. Click here to see the plug in download I found. Shame its too late but its definitely something to consider next time!

Competitors

Cooking apps have become increasingly popular so there is a lot competition when researching the market.

When typing in ‘cooking’ on the Apps Store there are a great deal of recipe apps which access large databases full of recipes. Like my app they are typically divided into categories depending on the user’s tastes. However I feel my app has a lot more to offer with its personalised nature.

Other famous chefs have used their names to create a recipe app. Jamie Oliver has one called ‘Jamie’s recipes’. Like my app this contains a shopping list section where ingredients from your selected recipe can be added. He also contains a video section of the app which contains a welcome message from Jamie himself, knife skills and a video showing how to secure a chopping board. Yet it should be noted that this app only offers 10 free recipes and 3 free videos, to have access to more the user will need to subscribe and pay £1.99 for 1 month or £7.99 for 6 months.

Another interesting app I found was Be The Chef. Like my app it gives the user more control when selecting foods making it more personalised. It offers wide variety of ingredients like cabbage, potato, lamb etc. and then lets you decide the ingredients to go with it offering a range of recipes. This once again offers a free selection of recipes but access to the full app will cost 69p.

None of the apps I found offer the user to input the ingredients they already have in their fridge and cupboard so I feel may app does bring something new with its cost efficiency and personalised nature.

The average price people are willing to pay for an app is around 69p so this has helped my decision when pricing my app. I wouldn’t want to only offer a few recipes for free to my users as the whole point of my app is to give people a wide variety of recipes aiding in the cooking of new dinners. So my app would just be priced at 69p for full access.

Most cooking apps will be priced for free and only offer a small selection of recipes. The Good Food app offers 20 free classic recipes whilst purchasing another collection of recipes is £1.49 each.

Cost efficiency

A key aspect when cooking nowadays is cost efficiency. Food bills can be excessively expensive especially when families are cooking for several members. To keep my app appealing to my target audience the virtual app will let you input what’s already in your fridge or cupboard to maximise cost efficiency. Therefore unnecessary ingredients will not need to be purchased saving you time and money. Should the recipe need several ingredients it will compare the prices of main supermarket competitors and recommend the cheapest one to buy from

Why choose an app?

It is estimated that there are over 1 billion smartphones being used worldwide and it was recorded in June 2012 over 30 billion apps had been downloaded from the Apple Apps Store. With these figures in mind I am confident an app would sell and receive quick recognition . An apps is a great way to engage the user due to its portable and quick nature. When deciding what to cook parents can quickly check my app during a lunch break or school run saving them time ‘googling’ recipes or sifting through recipe books.

According to PC Mag the average age for a smart phone user is around 30 years old whilst the average age for a tablet user is 34 years old. Therefore my target audience for families/ young parents is reasonably realistic for these product users. It has also been revealed that tablet owners are more likely to use their device between 7-10pm whilst smart phone users on are their device at all times throughout the day. This enhances my confidence in my app as parents could be selecting their recipes on their iphone earlier on in the day whilst perhaps then following a recipe directly in the evening from a tablet. It should also be noted that smart phones are generally for communication and task-oriented activities.

It’s simplicity and efficiency is not only what makes my app so attractive. As mentioned smart phones and tablets are perfect for their portability.  Reading recipes from a phone or tablet means that’s recipes can be followed easily without taking up a lot of cooking space. Recipes can be followed in hand whilst preparing a dish saving time logging on to laptops or book marking recipe pages. My app will also have a speak option so methods can be followed without even having to read them.

Half of Briton cook no more than 10 different meals

Whilst researching online for more ideas surrounding my app I came across this article from the Express Online. The article backs my claim of brits being bored of cooking the same dinners all the time. It claims that around half  the nation cook no more than 10 different meals. This enhanced my confidence in my app and that there is definitely a place in the market for my app.

Before I decided who would be the perfect face for my app, I had to first pinpoint my target audience. When considering where the idea of my app came from it was a young parent, so I feel families would be the best target audience. Parents are always conscious on serving up healthy dinners for their children and are less likely to grab a sandwich or a light snack for dinner than youngsters or those without a family to feed.

Now I had my target audience I began to list some famous chefs that could work. Initially I considered Jamie Oliver as he is renowned for being concerned about the welfare of children’s dinners. However after researching the idea I found he already had a food app available, ‘Jamie’s recipes’,

I also considered Gordon Ramsay however after researching his recipes, they seemed to be more luxury and speciality dishes rather than family friendly.

I then considered Delia Smith. After being the face of Waitrose she certainly represents healthy tasty foods. Her recipes are renowned for being simple so it wouldn’t put off parents who are looking  to cook quick and simple dinners. Her recipes are certainly family friendly and her approachable personality and like ability sees her as being the perfect representative. She is also the UK’s leading cookery author so her high profile would be sure to attract the attention of app users.

My app idea

The idea for my app actually came to me when I was getting my hair done. My hairdresser was complaining about not knowing what to cook for dinner. She was a young mum and had a toddler and her partner to cook for every night. She complained about cooking the same dishes all the time and said she was bored of doing the same foods all the time. This got me thinking about when I was child. I was one of three so sometimes my mum would have five people to cook for each night. She typically did a specific dish every night of the week so we always knew what we’d be eating. Even for a young child that gets pretty boring and repetitive!

So i’ve decided to design an app which will help you come up with a variety of new meals to rescue dinner time from becoming tedious! Obviously people know what foods they like to eat so my app will have different food categories like chicken, fish, pasta etc to help the user decide what to cook.

To make my app more appealing I want to find a famous chef to be the face of my app so its recipes will be trustworthy. Time to get thinking…..
